Theme Development

In chapter 2, we are given some gossip about Jay Gatsby. He is believed to be related to the ruler of Germany which could be a possible solution to the mystery of Gatsby's wealth. After hearing this gossip Nick becomes even more interested in Gatsby and begins to wonder why he looks at the green light. Nick is curious to find out what the green light represents for Jay Gatsby.

The valley of ashes is associated with poor people and represents the struggles and hard work these people accomplish to gain the American Dream of wealth and success. George Wilson works hard at is auto garage to earn money so maybe one day he can live like the people he is surrounded by in N.Y.C. Nick also describes an advertisement on a billboard of an eye doctor named T.J Eckleburg. He describes it as eyes that watch over the valley of ashes and N.Y.C.
