Plot Development

Chapter 6

Nick tells a story about Gatsby's past. His real name is James Gatz and he grew up in North Dakota, living on a farm. One summer, while working near Lake Superior as a fisherman, Gatz met a man named Dan Cody. Gatz told him that bis name was Jay Gatsby and he stook with that name ever since. Cody hired Gatsby to travel along with him and be his personal assistant. Out at sea, Gatsby fell in love with Cody's lifestyle of wealth and luxury. Gatsby took care of Cody whenever he got drunk. These experiences explains why Gatsby does not drink alcohol at his own parties. When Dan Cody died, he left Gatsby $ 25,000 but Cody's girlfriend stopped him from inheriting the money. From this moment on, Gatsby has dedicated his life to becoming a wealthy and successful man just like his influence, Dan Cody.
