Plot Development

Chapter 4

Nick has plans to drive to New York City with Gatsby to eat lunch. During the car ride Gatsby tells Nick stories about his past. Gatsby says he is the son of wealthy parents but they are deceased, he studied at Oxford University, and he has obtained WWI medals. Nick does not believe Gatsby because he is stumbling on words and is telling these stories fast. He tells Nick that when he has dinner with Jordan later she will fill him in on a favour he wants Nick to do for him. At lunch Nick is introduced to a man named Meyer Wolshiem. He is a gambling man  and an illegal businessman who takes part in organized crime. Wolshiem is also the man believed to be responsible for fixing the 1919 World Series. At lunch Nick spots Tom at another table and he takes Gatsby to introduce him to Tom but it is shown through expressions that Tom and Gatsby don't get along.
Later that day Nick meets Jordan for dinner where she informs Nick about what she has learned from her talk with Gatsby at his party. Back in 1917 the young Daisy and lieutenant Jay Gatsby fell in love but when Gatsby whent overseas to fight in WWI, Daisy married Tom. Jordan also tells Nick that Gatsby has bought his mansion in West Egg so he can live close to Daisy. Nick relizes that the green light that Gatsby stares at must be at the end of Daisy's dock. Jordan tells Nick that Gatsby's favour is to reunite Daisy and Gatsby. The plan is that Nick will invite Daisy over for tea and Gatsby will intentianaly be there surprising Daisy and forcing them to meet once again.
