Character development

George Wilson

George is a poor but hard working man who owns an auto shop garage in the valley of ashes. He is married to Myrtle, who he loves dearly. George is unaware of Myrtles affair with Tom but he has a feeling that his wife is sleeping around with other men.

Myrtle Wilson

Myrtle is married to George but she is unhappy with their relationship and is having a secret affair with Tom. Myrtle is a good looking women but she desperately looks for attention from others.

Tom Buchanan

In chapter 2, Tom's character develops. He acts like a bully and uses his social status and physical strength to dominate the others around him. When Tom is around Nick, he is open and willing to talk about his affair. However, when Tom is around his social friends he does not want them to know he is married. When Myrtle brings up Daisy's name, Tom becomes angry and is capable of hurting a women just to keep his secret hidden. Tom's true character is beginning to develop. I believe Tom is a selfish man who uses his strength to bully the people around him.
