Theme Development

The main theme in the Great Gatsby is obtaining the American Dream of becoming rich and living a successful life. Originally, the American dream was not associated with money but as the economy and society changed so did the American dream.  The American dream used to be about living free but now money is needed to lead our lives to freedom. Everybody works hard to earn money and tries to obtain this dream of wealth and success. Nick moves to West Egg looking to become a rich  businessman selling bonds. New York City is the centre of success in the United States and people from all over the world move to N.Y.C looking for wealth, success, and fame. Nick is curious about Gatsby and thinks to himself why he is looking at the green light across the water. I believe Gatsby is looking out at the light for hope that he can obtain his dream.
