Theme Development

At the end of the novel, Nick talks alot about the American Dream. People's dreams act as motivation to reach goals but in reality the dream is unobtainable. It is inevitable that people try to follow a dream and try to re-live the past to make it part of their future. trying to live the American dream is corrupt because in the process you damage yourself and you damage others.

"The Lion King" Disney movie has a great message about the past and how we have to learn from it, not try to re-live it.

This scene from the movie can be watched on youtube:

Character development

Gatsby's "friends" don't really care about him or the life that he lived because they cannot make time to go to his funeral. Tom and Daisy are selfish because they move away, only caring about themselves. Nick moves back to Minnesota because he cannot continue living his life in New York City surrounded by fake people.

Plot Development

Chapter 9

Nick is remembering the events that followed Gatsby's death. Reporters and journalists wanted to find out the facts about his death and more rumours were going around. Nick tried to organise a funeral for Gatsby but none of his "Friends" want to attend. Tom and Daisy moved away and left no new address and Meyer Wolshiem doesn't want to get into Gatsby's business. Sadly, the only people who attend the funeral are Nick, a few servants, owl eyes, and Gatsby's dad, Henry C Gatz, who came from Minnesota. Henry is very proud of his son and he tells Nick how Gatsby was intelligent and was always looking for an opportunity to better his knowledge.
At the end of the summer Nick decides to move back home to Minnesota because he is tired of living around the drama in New York City. On one of his last few days, Nick encounters Tom while walking around N.Y.C. Tom admits to Nick that he told George that the yellow car was Gatsby's but he does not feel bad that he is died. Tom says he misses his affair with Myrtle and tells Nick that Gatsby had it coming for him and that he deserved to die. Nick reflects on Tom's statements and concludes that Tom and Daisy are self-centred and that their actions hurt others but their money protects them from any consequences. On Nick's last night in N.Y.C he walks over to Gatsby's empty house and goes to the beach behind it. He looks out across the water and pictures the N.Y.C empty with no houses and just with trees, how the early explorers must have seen it. Nick connects this exploration with Gatsby's exploration of Daisy. The green land of America seen by the explorers was like the green light Gatsby watched at the end of Daisy's dock.
Nick concludes that Gatsby, who spent all his time trying to obtain the American Dream, failed to see that his dream ended a long time ago, and that his dreams just became empty and unobtainable hopes. Nick feels that everyone is motivated by their dreams to fulfil our futures, but we struggle to paddle our boats against the water's current that drags us back into the past.

Theme Development

A new theme of religion and God has been developed. The billboard with the eyes has been connected to the eyes of God. The theme is that God is always watching our actions and is open to give us guidance when it is needed. George Wilson makes this connection stating that we cannot lie to God and that God knows the truth of our actions and words.
Gatsby's American Dream was brought to an abrupt stop when he is murdered by George. Gatsby was not able to live his life with Daisy but he gained a true friend. Nick was always there to support Gatsby in times of need.

Character Development

Nick and Gatsby are becoming real friends and show that they are beginning to care for one another. Nick tries to cheer up his friend with a genuine compliment. Nick believes Gatsby is above all the people who start rumours about him. Nick wants to give Gatsby confidence and see his friend live a happy life.

Nick and Gatsby's newly formed friendship reminds me of Buzz and Woody from the Disney film "Toy Story". At first Woody is jealous and looks at Buzz Light Year with suspicion just like Nick did with Gatsby. However, over time Buzz and Woody become friends and have each others backs. Their bond between each other reminds me of the friendship that Nick has created with Gatsby.

Plot Development

Chapter 8

Nick cannot stop thinking about the car accident and Myrtle's tragic death so he decides to talk to Gatsby about it. Nick suggests to Gatsby that he should leave town and forget about Daisy but he refuses and brings up stories from the past. Gatsby says he fell in love with Daisy back in 1917 because of her social status, her wealth, her popularity, and her good looks. This was the first "nice" girl that Gatsby ever loved and he lied to her about his wealth to try and get her acceptance. Daisy did not wait for Gatsby after he returned from the war. She married Tom because he was rich and part of the same social status. Gatsby's gardener interrupts the conversation because it is the time of the season where he empties out the pool so it does not get clogged with leaves. Gatsby tell him to leave it for a few days because he wants to relax and enjoy the pool he neglected all summer long. Before Nick leaves he gives Gatsby a compliment by saying he is better than all the people that started rumours about him. Nick says good-bye and leaves for work.
At work Nick is still distracted by the terrible events that occurred and recalls what happened at George Wilson's garage the night before. George had confronted Myrtle about her affair and told her that she can lie to him but God knows the truth. George looked up at the billboard of the eyes and believes it represents the eyes of God looking down at everyone. Tom believes that Myrtle was running out to the street to stop the car of her lover so he believes the murderer must be the lover. George spends the next couple days trying to find out who that man is. He goes to Tom for information because he saw Tom driving the yellow car earlier in the afternoon on the day of the accident. George knows that Tom could not be the man because he arrived at the garage after the accident in another car with Nick and Jordan. Tom tells George that the car belongs to Jay Gatsby. George angrily goes to Gatsby's house and finds him in the pool floating on an air mattress. In anger George pulls out a hand-gun and shoots Gatsby, killing him. George knows that he does not want to face the consequences so he commits suicide in the field behind Gatsby's house. Nick hears this noise and goes to Gatsby's house to find out what happened. he finds Gatsby's dead body floating in the pool and Georges dead body in the tall grass. Nick imagines that Gatsby's last thoughts were about his empty life without Daisy.

Tom shows hatred towards Gatsby because he is in love with his wife Daisy and is trying to steal her away from him. Tom is also angry because his lover Myrtle is dead so Tom's love affair with her is over. Tom shows alot of aggression towards Gatsby and continues to develop hatred towards him.

Plot Development

Chapter 7

Gatsby has stopped throwing parties because he noticed that Daisy was not happy at his last one and he has been throwing parties to try and get her attention but it did not work. Gatsby even fired all his servants. One day Nick goes to Tom and Daisy's house for lunch and when he gets there he sees that Jordan and Gatsby have been invited as well. Gatsby cannot hide his love for Daisy and Tom has noticed this and watches Gatsby carefully. Daisy has an idea to go N.Y.C so the 5 of them drive there. Nick, Jordan, and Tom go together driving in Gatsby's car while Gatsby and Daisy drive in Tom's car. On the way to N.Y.C Nick, Jordan and Tom stop at George Wilson's garage to get gas. George tell them that he has caught his wife, Myrtle,  having an affair but he does not know who the man is. Once the group meets up in N.Y.C they decide to stay at a hotel for the afternoon. At the hotel Tom gets into an Argument with Gatsby and calls him out for acting fake and says his money comes from crime and bootlegging. Gatsby replies by saying that Daisy is not in love with Tom but instead in love with him. Gatsby wants Daisy to admit it that she is in love with him not Tom but Daisy can only reply by saying she once loved Gatsby but is now in love with Tom. Gatsby angrily grabs Daisy to take her to his car and drive home. Nick, Jordan, and Tom leave soon after. They stop to find out about an accident that they noticed on their way back home. A car accident had occurred outside George Wilson's garage. Myrtle was the victim of this accident and was dead on impact. Witnesses say it was a yellow car that hit Myrtle and it just kept driving. Nick realises it was Gatsby`s car because it fits all the descriptions. Tom assumes that Gatsby was the driver and now he has even more hatred toward Gatsby. Tom drives Jordan home and then drives to his house and calls a cab to pick up Nick. Tom goes inside to talk to his wife about the accident and Nick waits outside for the cab. While outside Nick finds Gatsby hiding in the bushes watching to make sure Tom does not harm Daisy. Gatsby admits to Nick that Daisy was driving his car when it hit Myrtle but says he will take the blame. Gatsby tell Nick to go to the window to see what is happening inside but Tom and Daisy are just sitting at the kitchen table. The cab comes to pick up nick and Gatsby is left standing alone in the moonlight.

The Great Gatsby novel reminds of the book/movie "The Count of Monte Cristo". In this book there are 2 best friends but one is jealous of the others fiance. The man gets his friend arrested so he goes to jail and loses his women. The man will steal his friends women while he is in jail. This is how Gatsby sees Tom. He believes Tom stole Daisy from him when he went to fight in the war.  Both Gatsby and the friend in Monte Cristo create an alter ego and become rich to get their women's love back and relive the past.

Theme

I have came across a song that can be related to Gatsby and his life. The song is called "Be Yourself" by Audioslave. Gatsby should just act like himself instead of living his life as a fake identity he just made up. He should realise that if he just acts like himself people will actually begin to like him and form relationships with him. Gatsby is just stuck in the past and fails to realise he cannot bring it back.

Audioslave "Be Yourself" Lyrics

Someone falls to pieces
Sleeping all alone
Someone kills the pain
Spinning in the silence
To finally drift away
Someone gets excited
In a chapel yard
Catches a bouquet
Another lays a dozen
White roses on a grave

To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do

Someone finds salvation in everyone
And another only pain
Someone tries to hide himself
Down inside himself he prays
Someone swears his true love
Until the end of time
Another runs away
Separate or united?
Healthy or insane?

To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do

And even when you've paid enough, been pulled apart or been held up
With every single memory of the good or bad faces of luck
don't lose any sleep tonight
I'm sure everything will end up alright

You may win or lose

But to be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do

A couple of weeks have passed since Gatsby reunited with Daisy at Nick's house and Nick hasn't even seen Gatsby since then either. One afternoon Nick decides to visit Gatsby at his house and when he gets there he is surprised to see Tom with a few friends. Tom was out riding horses with his friends from East Egg when they stopped at Gatsby's just to tease him and insult him because he lives in West Egg. Nick notices that Tom looks at Gatsby with suspicion because he knows about their past together but does not know that Gatsby is still in love with Daisy.
The next Saturday, Daisy and Tom attend one of Gatsby's parties. Tom is not very interested in the party, he just wants to keep an eye on Daisy making sure that she is never alone with Gatsby. Daisy is not having a good time and as the night goes on the party gets boring so Daisy and Tom decide to leave early. After they leave Gatsby talks to Nick about his emotions. Gatsby is sad that Daisy did not enjoy his party. Gatsby wants everything to be the way it was in the past. He wants Daisy to leave Tom so they can be together. Nick stops Gatsby's thought and reminds him that he cannot relive the past, however Gatsby argues that he can. Gatsby believes that his wealth and money can win Daisy's affection. Nick leaves the party and recalls the first time that Gatsby kissed Daisy and how Gatsby wants to relive that moment again. Nick believes that Gatsby's dream is over because he is reunited with Daisy but she is not living up to his expectations.

One summer, while working near Lake Superior as a fisherman, Gatz met a man named Dan Cody. Gatz told him that bis name was Jay Gatsby and he stook with that name ever since. Cody hired Gatsby to travel along with him and be his personal assistant. Out at sea, Gatsby fell in love with Cody's lifestyle of wealth and luxury. Gatsby took care of Cody whenever he got drunk. These experiences explains why Gatsby does not drink alcohol at his own parties. When Dan Cody died, he left Gatsby $ 25,000 but Cody's girlfriend stopped him from inheriting the money. From this moment on, Gatsby has dedicated his life to becoming a wealthy and successful man just like his influence, Dan Cody.

Theme Development

Gatsby talks to Daisy about the green light on the end of her dock. To Gatsby, this light represents his future with Daisy and their happiness together. Gatsby will continue to look at the green light searching for hope until he obtains happiness and Daisy's love once again.

Character Development

When Gatsby reunites with Daisy, his actions change. he usually acts like a snobby rich guy but when Daisy is around he acts like a gentleman. Gatsby gets nervous waiting to see Daisy and becomes clumsy in her presence. He almost drops a clock at Nick's house but he catches it which is a symbol that Gatsby wants to stop time and relive the past. Gatsby shows emotions and tries to impress Daisy with his luxurious possessions.

The fact that Gatsby associates himself with Myer Wolshiem makes him and his wealth suspicious. Wolshiem takes part in organised crime and makes me believe that Gatsby's wealth may also come from organised crime because he is friends with Wolshiem.

Theme Development

It is shown through his fancy car, big mansion and luxurious parties that Jay Gatsby is extremely wealthy. There are alot of rumours going around about Gatsby so no one really knows where his money is coming from.

Nick is an honest and hard working man who makes his money working in the Bond Business. Hard work pays off and one day Nick will earn enough money to support himself and a family in the future. However not everybody makes their money in an honest way. An example of this is shown in 50 Cent's movie "Get Rich or Die Trying". In this movie 50 Cent is part of an illegal Mob that steals, kills and sells drugs to get money.

Theme

When people think about the American Dream they picture a wealthy and successful business man who has a beautiful wife and children who can inherit the business and all it's money. For me, an example of this definition is a man named Donald Trump. He is an American real estate agent, a television personality and an author. Donald is the chairman and president of the Trump Organisation and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. He lives an extravagant lifestyle, has great class, and has his own t.v show "The Apprentice". He is a real-estate developer who builds hotels, casinos and other properties in  New York City and all over the world.

Donald Trump has a few tips of his own that he has followed and says that anybody should follow if they want to be successful.

Theme Development

In chapter 2, we are given some gossip about Jay Gatsby. He is believed to be related to the ruler of Germany which could be a possible solution to the mystery of Gatsby's wealth. After hearing this gossip Nick becomes even more interested in Gatsby and begins to wonder why he looks at the green light. Nick is curious to find out what the green light represents for Jay Gatsby.

The valley of ashes is associated with poor people and represents the struggles and hard work these people accomplish to gain the American Dream of wealth and success. George Wilson works hard at is auto garage to earn money so maybe one day he can live like the people he is surrounded by in N.Y.C. Nick also describes an advertisement on a billboard of an eye doctor named T.J Eckleburg. He describes it as eyes that watch over the valley of ashes and N.Y.C.

Character development

George Wilson

George is a poor but hard working man who owns an auto shop garage in the valley of ashes. He is married to Myrtle, who he loves dearly. George is unaware of Myrtles affair with Tom but he has a feeling that his wife is sleeping around with other men.

Myrtle Wilson

Myrtle is married to George but she is unhappy with their relationship and is having a secret affair with Tom. Myrtle is a good looking women but she desperately looks for attention from others.

Tom Buchanan

In chapter 2, Tom's character develops. He acts like a bully and uses his social status and physical strength to dominate the others around him. When Tom is around Nick, he is open and willing to talk about his affair. However, when Tom is around his social friends he does not want them to know he is married. When Myrtle brings up Daisy's name, Tom becomes angry and is capable of hurting a women just to keep his secret hidden. Tom's true character is beginning to develop. I believe Tom is a selfish man who uses his strength to bully the people around him.

They have a small party and get drunk all night. During the party Catherine tells Nick that she has heard that Gatsby is the nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm, who was the ruler of Germany in WWI. This gossip interests Nick because he wants to find out more about Gatsby and his wealth. Nick begins to get bored at the party because he is not interested with the groups conversations about fashion or photography. As the night continues everyone drinks more and more and Myrtle becomes a loud and obnoxious drunk. She mentions Daisy to the other guests and Tom is not happy about that. He warns her not to mention her name but Myrtle says she can say whatever she wants. Myrtle begins to yell out her name and Tom becomes angry. He responds by punching her in the face and ends up breaking her nose. Tom's actions abruptly end the party. Nick leaves and waits for the 4 AM train back to West Egg.

Theme Development

The main theme in the Great Gatsby is obtaining the American Dream of becoming rich and living a successful life. Originally, the American dream was not associated with money but as the economy and society changed so did the American dream.  The American dream used to be about living free but now money is needed to lead our lives to freedom. Everybody works hard to earn money and tries to obtain this dream of wealth and success. Nick moves to West Egg looking to become a rich  businessman selling bonds. New York City is the centre of success in the United States and people from all over the world move to N.Y.C looking for wealth, success, and fame. Nick is curious about Gatsby and thinks to himself why he is looking at the green light across the water. I believe Gatsby is looking out at the light for hope that he can obtain his dream.

Character Development

Tom Buchanan

Tom is one of Nick's old friends from college. He is very strong and is also very wealthy. Because of his strength, he used to play on his college football team. Tom is married to Daisy and they live together on East Egg in a big house. Tom is having an affair with a women from New York City and is keeping it a secret from his wife. Tom comes off as a racist because he talks down about coloured people when he describes the book he is reading, "The Rise of The Coloured Empires" by Godard. I believe Tom is a selfish man with a big ego.

Daisy Buchanan

Daisy is Nick's cousin from Louisville Kentucky and is married to Tom. Together Daisy and Tom have a 3 year old daughter who they are raising in East Egg. Nick describes daisy as a beautiful women and says her voice is soft and delicate.

Jordan Baker

Jordan is Daisy's friend who is a professional golfer. Jordan seems shy because she barely talks to Nick during dinner at Daisy's house. She gets bored easily because she rushes off after dinner to get home and sleep for her golf tournament the next day.

Character Development

Nick Carraway

Nick Caraway is a young man from Minnesota who moves to West Egg in 1922. he had also fought in world war 1 in 1918. Nick has moved to West Egg to work in the bond business and earn some money. Nick is the narrator of the novel and he describes himself as open minded, a good listener and honest. Nick tells the reader some advice that his father gave him when he was younger. "whenever you feel like criticising anyone, just remember that all the people in the world haven't had the advantages that you've had". This advice means that we should not judge people and to be honest. Despite Nick's judgement of other characters in the novel, I still believe he is an honest man and a trustworthy narrator.

Setting

There are 4 main settings in the novel "The Great Gatsby". They are East Egg, West Egg, The valley of ashes, and New York City. East Egg is an island just off of N.Y.C which consists of aristocrats that have lived there for many generations. East Egg is a wealthy place where the "old Money" lives. These people are snobby and don't need to show off their money. Daisy and Tom live together in East Egg. The West Egg is "new money". These people have just acquired their wealth and feel the need to show it off and spend it in outrageous ways. Gatsby and Nick leave in West Egg. The Valley of Ashes is the third setting. The people who live here are poor and are the working class. George Wilson and his wife Myrtle live in the valley. The final setting of the novel is New York City. In the 1920's N.Y.C was the place for rich businesses and success. Tom's apartment where he has an affair with Myrtle is located in N.Y.C. The settings of the novel describe the people who live in these ares.
