Theme Development

At the end of the novel, Nick talks alot about the American Dream. People's dreams act as motivation to reach goals but in reality the dream is unobtainable. It is inevitable that people try to follow a dream and try to re-live the past to make it part of their future. trying to live the American dream is corrupt because in the process you damage yourself and you damage others.

"The Lion King" Disney movie has a great message about the past and how we have to learn from it, not try to re-live it.

This scene from the movie can be watched on youtube:

Character development

Gatsby's "friends" don't really care about him or the life that he lived because they cannot make time to go to his funeral. Tom and Daisy are selfish because they move away, only caring about themselves. Nick moves back to Minnesota because he cannot continue living his life in New York City surrounded by fake people.

Plot Development

Chapter 9

Nick is remembering the events that followed Gatsby's death. Reporters and journalists wanted to find out the facts about his death and more rumours were going around. Nick tried to organise a funeral for Gatsby but none of his "Friends" want to attend. Tom and Daisy moved away and left no new address and Meyer Wolshiem doesn't want to get into Gatsby's business. Sadly, the only people who attend the funeral are Nick, a few servants, owl eyes, and Gatsby's dad, Henry C Gatz, who came from Minnesota. Henry is very proud of his son and he tells Nick how Gatsby was intelligent and was always looking for an opportunity to better his knowledge.
At the end of the summer Nick decides to move back home to Minnesota because he is tired of living around the drama in New York City. On one of his last few days, Nick encounters Tom while walking around N.Y.C. Tom admits to Nick that he told George that the yellow car was Gatsby's but he does not feel bad that he is died. Tom says he misses his affair with Myrtle and tells Nick that Gatsby had it coming for him and that he deserved to die. Nick reflects on Tom's statements and concludes that Tom and Daisy are self-centred and that their actions hurt others but their money protects them from any consequences. On Nick's last night in N.Y.C he walks over to Gatsby's empty house and goes to the beach behind it. He looks out across the water and pictures the N.Y.C empty with no houses and just with trees, how the early explorers must have seen it. Nick connects this exploration with Gatsby's exploration of Daisy. The green land of America seen by the explorers was like the green light Gatsby watched at the end of Daisy's dock.
Nick concludes that Gatsby, who spent all his time trying to obtain the American Dream, failed to see that his dream ended a long time ago, and that his dreams just became empty and unobtainable hopes. Nick feels that everyone is motivated by their dreams to fulfil our futures, but we struggle to paddle our boats against the water's current that drags us back into the past.

Theme Development

A new theme of religion and God has been developed. The billboard with the eyes has been connected to the eyes of God. The theme is that God is always watching our actions and is open to give us guidance when it is needed. George Wilson makes this connection stating that we cannot lie to God and that God knows the truth of our actions and words.
Gatsby's American Dream was brought to an abrupt stop when he is murdered by George. Gatsby was not able to live his life with Daisy but he gained a true friend. Nick was always there to support Gatsby in times of need.

Character Development

Nick and Gatsby are becoming real friends and show that they are beginning to care for one another. Nick tries to cheer up his friend with a genuine compliment. Nick believes Gatsby is above all the people who start rumours about him. Nick wants to give Gatsby confidence and see his friend live a happy life.

Nick and Gatsby's newly formed friendship reminds me of Buzz and Woody from the Disney film "Toy Story". At first Woody is jealous and looks at Buzz Light Year with suspicion just like Nick did with Gatsby. However, over time Buzz and Woody become friends and have each others backs. Their bond between each other reminds me of the friendship that Nick has created with Gatsby.

Plot Development

Chapter 8

Nick cannot stop thinking about the car accident and Myrtle's tragic death so he decides to talk to Gatsby about it. Nick suggests to Gatsby that he should leave town and forget about Daisy but he refuses and brings up stories from the past. Gatsby says he fell in love with Daisy back in 1917 because of her social status, her wealth, her popularity, and her good looks. This was the first "nice" girl that Gatsby ever loved and he lied to her about his wealth to try and get her acceptance. Daisy did not wait for Gatsby after he returned from the war. She married Tom because he was rich and part of the same social status. Gatsby's gardener interrupts the conversation because it is the time of the season where he empties out the pool so it does not get clogged with leaves. Gatsby tell him to leave it for a few days because he wants to relax and enjoy the pool he neglected all summer long. Before Nick leaves he gives Gatsby a compliment by saying he is better than all the people that started rumours about him. Nick says good-bye and leaves for work.
At work Nick is still distracted by the terrible events that occurred and recalls what happened at George Wilson's garage the night before. George had confronted Myrtle about her affair and told her that she can lie to him but God knows the truth. George looked up at the billboard of the eyes and believes it represents the eyes of God looking down at everyone. Tom believes that Myrtle was running out to the street to stop the car of her lover so he believes the murderer must be the lover. George spends the next couple days trying to find out who that man is. He goes to Tom for information because he saw Tom driving the yellow car earlier in the afternoon on the day of the accident. George knows that Tom could not be the man because he arrived at the garage after the accident in another car with Nick and Jordan. Tom tells George that the car belongs to Jay Gatsby. George angrily goes to Gatsby's house and finds him in the pool floating on an air mattress. In anger George pulls out a hand-gun and shoots Gatsby, killing him. George knows that he does not want to face the consequences so he commits suicide in the field behind Gatsby's house. Nick hears this noise and goes to Gatsby's house to find out what happened. he finds Gatsby's dead body floating in the pool and Georges dead body in the tall grass. Nick imagines that Gatsby's last thoughts were about his empty life without Daisy.
